George Grant

George was born in Port of Mentieth, Stirlingshire, and after living in various locations throughout Scotland, has settled in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire. He joined Stoddard Carpets in 1962 as a designer, and studied at Glasgow School of Art in the 1960s.
Inspiration and themes for his work come principally from Scottish landscape, particularly the image and spirit of his home village of Kilbarchan.
George’s work includes the media of oil, acrylic and watercolour painting, also pastel, conte, mixed media and modified photographs.
George has exhibited in mixed and solo exhibitions in many galleries and his awards include the Purchase Prize in 2000 and the Arnold Clark PAI Prize in 2001.
He says “This village, located on the fringes of rural and suburban life, is typical of places where man made marks impinge on the natural world and create the compositional tension that I use in my work. I am particularly interested in the way that memory can filter and change the way images are created. I am also drawn to the mysterious and unique times associated with Celtic ritual and festival”.
