RICHARD STRACHAN

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Richard Strachan

Richard was born in Edinburgh and graduated from Gray’s School of Art in 2001.  He has recently had a one man show in Cardiff and has previously exhibited in Penarth, Oxford, Bristol, Teddington and Birmingham.

He says that his work is derived from interior spaces and the interaction of planes, light and colour within them.  The motivation for his work is provided by the sensory experience inherent within our constructed environments.

The works are built in layers using transparent gloss paint as a binder for the pigment.  The resulting image engages on a number of levels; the pieces are highly reflective which disrupts the separation between the viewer and the painter.  Ultimately the aesthetic encourages an emotive reflection with the environment described whilst hinting at a quality within it that is more difficult to obtain.

On receiving his prize he said “A year ago I quit my job because I wanted to push forward and this is just a fantastic vindication of that decision – a dream come true”
